If someone is dismissive of anything craftsy, I tend to argue for the fuzziness of the boundary between art and craft--but when it comes to my own work and comparing with friends of mine who have BFAs and make their living as full-time painters I tend to self-identify as more of a crafter, even though I minored in art in college. I used to pour, fire, sell ceramics at "craft" shows. I now paint watercolors and have not invested the money for framing and display equipment to enter street art shows. Both are artistic expression and creation of a product. Yet, paintings have never really been labeled as craft I don't think. <br /><br />Funny though, in Etsy search, the returned page says "Handmade Paintings, Shop for unique, handmade paintings from our artisan community." They obviously plug whatever category name into their headline. So, yes I make handmade paintings. It seems that wearable art straddles the two definitions. Soap and candle making have been known as crafts for centuries. Is utility a factor here? And price is definitely a factor. People creating and selling $10 items are not going to be found in the same venue as people selling $1000 items. Except on Etsy. You are right, some who believe they are artists DO NOT WANT to be placed as a crafter. I find a lot of these people have been to college and have an degree in art. Hey they paid for the title. I also think there is a distinction between the weekend crafter who can only create from an already printed pattern and the people who apply true craftsman/womanship to their art. How ever one creates they have put what they believe is their best into the project. They are proud of what they have made and want recognition for it. As far as selling, there is a difference between craft shows. Some are low end and my work would certainly not sell at them. I look for high end craft shows. I also sell my work in art galleries.
