Before I left for Italy, I planned to write and paint my way through our trip. Using my S Memo on my smartphone, I was able to write in the evening about our activities during the day. And I brought with me the little bitty journal my mom had given me as a present. I started to paint or draw every day, but didn't quite keep up. Here are some of my drawings that most people haven't seen:

Here's a quick sketch and the actually photo of the monastery and graveyard that we saw, down in the valley from Cortona. I was just amazed at the place, but we never went down there to visit. We spent the whole day in Cortona - it was just great!
He's another sketch and photo, this time in Bolzano. I thought when I took the photo you could see the whole bridge, with all the locks up and down the metal rungs. I guess I didn't. But it wasn't hard to forget and I was able to draw it in my journal (I added the watercolors later).
Here's a larger sketch of the bridge in Bolzano I did in my art journal. Unfortunately, I was still away when the Letter B was scheduled. But you can find it here, in a post I called "Why I Loved Bolzano". Hopefully, there will be enough cities and subjects to get me through the alphabet.

What a great idea to use the photos you took as starting off points for your sketches and journal pages! You're so darn creative!
I like the cover--very pretty! And I like how you used the photos as jumping off places for the journal pages.
It sure looks like you had such a grand time in Italy. What a trip this must have been for you! I found an old sketch pad, partially used and I'm going to start my own journal. You inspired me! =D

What an awesome way to remember your trip! When I went as a chaperone, one of our kids was doing the same- she said as a gift to her parents she was going to do a writing & drawing journal, a page a day. I thought that was so cool & wise of her and vowed to do the same if I ever returned!
But of course you did JOURNAL for J, because who could do it better than you?!! I love your journal pages. They are simply delightful.
Thanks for your kind comment on my blog. I definitely do find joy in my journeys.
What a great idea to have a drawing and writing journal. I could never keep one up. Thank God, I have my camera ;)

I'll bet you felt like you were re-living every aspect of your visit to Italy as you journaled it. These sketches are delightful.
what a fun adventure! i wonder what the locks mean too. in your 360 video i really got a feel for what it looked like. :)
I love the way you have the photo and then your sketch -- that way must make a more personal memory than a photo alone.
It's a great idea to use photos and then do drawings of your trip! That'll make it really fun to look at in years to come! Those locks on the bridge are interesting.
What a fun way to remember your trip! Sounds like you had a great time =)
I love keeping journals, and this one is so cool! That is such a wonderful and creative idea! My favorite journal is the one I write in each night for my boys. I put in a few lines every day about something we have done together.
The monastery is just beautiful! I love your plane drawing.
I like your journal! I'm going to Europe in a month and the thought of keeping a journal and sketching in it is very tempting - it would make me slow down, I think.
It is always Joyous experience going through old Journals and remembering things that were forgotten...
Great post for the letter J...
Thanks for linking.
