Some other options available are:
*packaged trail mix - you can buy these in bulk, and the ones the kids don't take, you get to keep!
*granola and breakfast bars - these you can also buy in bulk - I love them, but kids might not
*dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, which is an excellent source of antioxidants. I've never like dark chocolate, but if you have to buy candy, at least there's something good about it
*toys and stickers - lots of sites are talking about stickers, something all kids love to get. Maybe little cars for boys, and crayons, for the budding artists.
Today I went grocery shopping. This is what I brought home for the trick-or-treaters: ScoobyDoo, Spiderman, and Dora the Explorer!

Each box comes with 10 bags of little figurines. They are made from concentrated fruit juice, have 90 calories, and you can find them in the breakfast aisle. Kinda like those wrap-ups that I remember as a kid. At least, I think I was a kid when I ate them... Not the best thing to hand out, but something a little different for their stash of goodies.
So, are you going to be stationed by the door this Halloween? What are you handing out?

Yes, I love to see the kids all dressed up. I usually give out candy. Some years back I tried other things. don't remember exactly what. When I was young someone in my neighborhood gave out nickels. I know this is going to date me, but nickels could actually buy something back then.
I will be hanging out with the furbabies but my husband will hand out candy to the ghosts and goblins who come by. We usually get Snickers since I don't like them that well. Less temptation for me!
There's no way we can buy candy yet - my hubby would eat it all!
Nice fruities!
It's our first Halloween in our new neighborhood, so I still need to find out if we even get trick or treaters (our old neighborhood was a bust-- I've never handed out candy before!). If there are, I'll be on the porch waiting with a big bowl of candy! But I don't know what kind yet...
Unfortunately, Halloween isn't big here in Germany...but giving healthy snacks and stickers is a great idea!
I'd love to be the one on the receiving end of the stickers ;-)
What a good idea! I love those little fruit snacks. Last year my mother made a little snack assortment for my son - little packs of Goldfish crackers, pretzels and Teddy Grahams. My son doesn't eat candy and he's only 2, so I am glad for that, he has enough energy without adding sugar!
I love Trick-or-Treaters. Unfortunately, we don't get too many where we live now--the houses are a little far apart.
But I like to give out plastic vampire teeth and spider rings, and other little toys. The kids seem to love them. :o)
I love to hand out candy and see the costumes! Because we live in the country, we only get about 15 kids from the area, so I like to give out full size chocolate bars. I always enjoyed getting those BIG ones as achild!
Trying to leave a comment again (if this works, it's because I've relaxed some of my cookie things in Options.)
Well, love your blog! I'd love to give out non-candy treats, but I think the neighborhood kids will rebel! A few years ago I used to stock up on full-sized candybars in the beginning of the month - for years they went on sale at 4/$1 and all I ever bought were about $10 worth. Now that I have more kids nearby, I haven't seen such great sales like this... Not sure what this year's Halloween will bring!
good ideas--maybe my dad would have let us keep our trick or treating bags if we got these kinda things in them... ;)
That's a great idea! I know some little ones who don't need anymore candy!!!!
Then I think about my brother, when we were little. I ate mine a.s.a.p. and he would save and save his. Mom would end up throwing it out because it got too old...but, even if he didn't enjoy it, he did enjoy holding it over my head!
I have a party this year, I hope the kids come out early so I don't miss them.
My mom handed out raisins and 100% fruit juice freeze pops. I told her thats why we never got trick-or-treaters LOL
This is a nice twist on Halloween!
great post! Oops - I gotta go buy candy or something! Happy Halloween!
